Welcome To Your Past
The Brighton Area Historical Society is your connection to local history.  Our goal is to discover and learn about our history because we believe our past is worth preserving.  If you share our passion for history, then you are in the right place.  The BAHS is focused on the history of the greater Brighton Area and the surrounding townships of Livingston County, Michigan.  We also operate the historic Lyon School house which has been fully restored and features an elementary school curriculum.  Please take a moment and look around.  Your history is here waiting to be discovered.

Document Scanning on Tuesdays

The Brighton Area Historical Society has a large archive of historical data dating back to the 19th century.  One of our goals is convert all archives to digital format to ensure that we have a lasting record of historical data.  Also, by converting our archives to digital format, we can make them accessable to the public via our web site.  Having an online searchable archive will be of great value to our community for the purposes of research, geneology, and education.

The Ten Cent Barn

Valet parking has been around for a long time.  Leo J. McQuade was doing it around the turn of the century.  In an article written for “The Good Old Days” (Brighton Argus?) in 1975, he reminisced about his Saturday job as a youngster in Brighton.  He worked at the Eastern House, N. E. corner Grand River and Main St., helping collect the 10 cent charged to people using the Ten Cent Barn.  Leo’s pay was the tip given him by those whose horse he brought to the hotel entrance.  For female customers this was, of course, the usual procedure.
